Top 10 things to do in Port Douglas

If you’re planning your tropical escape to the heavenly town of Port Douglas, you’ll find comfort in knowing that there are hundreds of activities to keep you occupied throughout your stay! There’s plenty to do here – aside from the top of the line restaurants and bars, the shopping boutiques on Macrossan Street, fishing trips and brilliant golf courses, there are endless ways to spend your days in the paradise that is the tropics.

To get you started, here are the Top 10 things to do in Port Douglas – let’s get into it!

Great Barrier Reef

There’s no surprises that the World Heritage GBR has made the top of this list – it’s our pride and joy here in Far North Queensland! A common priority for visitors is to find Nemo, which you will likely do, but don’t forget about the thousands of stunning fish species, giant clams, friendly reef sharks and majestic Green Sea turtles just to name a few. Another option is to head to Low Isles for an unforgettable island escape.

Cape Tribulation and Daintree

A mini road trip towards the north will lead you to the oldest tropical rainforest in the world that exists between the Daintree and Cape Tribulation! There is a whole new world to discover just 1.5 hours from Port Douglas that lies within this fascinating part of Australia. Although it’s slightly off the beaten track, there’s so many amazing experiences for you to embark on – swimming, hiking, exploring and most importantly – tasting DELICIOUS ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company!

Nature Walks

Get outdoors! There aren’t many better places in QLD to immerse yourself in nature and frolic in the beauty that Tropical North Queensland has to offer. Take a stroll through the heart of Port Douglas along the beautiful Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail, or take things up a notch and hike up the notorious Bump Track!

Sunset Sail

There’s something really special about a sunset sail in FNQ! In the afternoon the sky is painted with bold and gorgeous colours, and the sunset show over the ocean is always an absolute delight to feast your eyes on. Sailaway or Indigo Charters are known to have remarkable sailing sessions in Port Douglas that leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Mossman Gorge

The Mossman Gorge is a truly magical place that is full of abundant history. Learn about the Aboriginal culture on a Dreamtime rainforest walk or swim in the crystal clear and fast flowing gorges. Located only 15 minutes north of Port Douglas, this is one adventure that cannot be missed during your stay, we promise!

Picnic at Rex Smeal Park

The best things in life are free! This is one of the simplest and most enjoyable things to do in Port Douglas – ask any local. There are phenomenal views over the Coral Sea and Daintree mountain ranges when chilling out and indulging in your favourite picnic snacks and a couple of drinks. Rex Smeal Park has a relaxed atmosphere but is usually buzzing with locals and tourists alike who have the same idea as you!

Kuranda & Skyrail

Situated close to Cairns, Kuranda is a quaint village that is known for it’s markets and colourful collection of stores. It’s well worth the journey simply to stroll around the lovely town or visit the butterfly sanctuary – but you’ll be glad that you jumped on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to view the incredible area from a whole new (birds-eye) perspective.

Parasailing

If you’re after a bit of exhilaration – parasailing in Port is the activity for you! Fly high in a parasailing chute while being pulled across the sea by boat, and have your friends or family take some epic shots while you’re up in the air! Organise your experience with Uplift Watersports for a fun-filled day on the water; each trip can cater for up to 10 guests.

Jungle Surfing

Jungle Surfing is one of the most unique and highly recommended adventure journeys available in the north, and for good reason. Travel to Cape Tribulation for a zip line experience of a lifetime that is also jam-packed with interesting information about the ancient surrounding rainforest. This is a showstopper for all kids – but any adults will love every second too!

Water Adventures

If you’re up for a new and exciting challenge, why not try your hand at a lesson in water sports? There are some fantastic stand up paddle boarding and kitesurfing lessons available in PD with Windswell that are loads of fun and are sure to keep you entertained for hours on end! For more of an adrenaline rush, jump on a jet ski thrill ride with Adventures Port Douglas.

We really weren’t kidding when we said there’s plenty to do in paradise – and one thing’s for sure, you won’t be bored a single minute of your FNQ holiday!
