You may think that the people of Far North Queensland couldn’t get anymore laidback when the spectacular Great Barrier Reef is right on their doorstep, but the truth is, we really know how to throw a party. That’s the reason why our events are as memorable and impressive as they are – we combine jaw-dropping tropical scenery with a truck-load of awesome talent, and voilà!

This year, you can celebrate Carnivale’s 25th anniversary in Port Douglas or hit the road to Cairns Festival, Wallaby Creek, or the Tablelands for some fantastic music and arts madness. So what are you waiting for? Let’s check out what’s on offer in 2019!

Carnivale Port Douglas

When: 24th– 26th May

Welcome to an extravagant and jam-packed weekend of festivities in the tropics! This year marks the 25th anniversary of Carnivale, which means that you can expect it to be bigger and better than ever.

See the all-time favourites that make Carnivale, Carnivale – this includes some killer live music, an epic family beach day, and the buzzing street parade on Macrossan Street. Not to mention, this year there will be more incredible events that you don’t want to miss such as the seaside Longest Lunch, the Seafood Extravaganza, and Out!

Cairns Festival

When: 21st August – 1st September

For something a little closer to home, the vibrant Cairns Festival offers exciting celebrations that run for just under two weeks – and the best part is, most of the events are totally free! There’s something for everyone to love with a diverse program that’s filled with music, art, theatre, film, and comedy.

The festivities will take place from Babinda to Trinity Beach and will feature some outstanding venues such as the magical and newly developed Munro Martin Parklands in the city centre.

There are plenty of ways that you can get involved in this unique event that aims to share the love and bring the community together! The street parade is always a hit, along with the family concerts and film nights. And of course, there will be fireworks – because who doesn’t love fireworks?

Wallaby Creek Festival

When: 27th-29th September

If you’ve ever wanted to get lost in the music and dance your way through the rainforest, Wallaby Creek is the perfect festival for you! For 3 extraordinary days, there are endless forms of entertainment taking place in a one-of-a-kind scenic location.

Embark on a road trip to Roseville, which is located a short distance from Cooktown. With each journey taking approximately 4-5 hours, you can travel inland via Cairns, or take the stunning coastal route through the Daintree and the Bloomfield track.

This event is all about showcasing remarkable music from FNQ and beyond, as well as some hands-on workshops, street theatre, poetry, dancers, circus shows, and heaps of fun for the kids. All the while, immerse yourself in the picturesque surroundings and enjoy the fresh water swimming in nearby gorges and waterfalls!


Tablelands Folk Festival

When: 25th-27th October

Located only an hour’s drive from Cairns, this relaxed weekend gathering is the ultimate place for all music lovers to unite! You’ll be spoiled for choice with phenomenal talent ranging from blues and gypsy jazz to flamenco, reggae and rock.

There are many beautiful places to see and things to do in the luscious Tablelands, so this festival is a wonderful place to start. Make sure to visit the Gallo dairy farm for some mouthwatering treats, and don’t forget about the Mt. Uncle distillery! If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a gorgeous waterfall circuit in the area too.

Believe it or not, there will be more than 50 acts to relish in over this marvelous 3-day weekend. This includes Indigenous language influences, market stalls, songwriting competitions, wellness fairs and so much more. As you can imagine, the whole festival consists of unforgettable times and feel-good vibes!
